Peaks and Senseless Signs
My mom just taught a bunch of Japanese ladies some medieval Italian literature: Boccaccio's Decameron. They ate it up like "cakie." I was impressed, as I always am with my parents, of her teaching skills and the depth of her knowledge in her field. Good job mom! We even got paid to do it!
Earlier in the day we stopped by her favorite ceramicist's house and had some awkward moments trying to figure out what to buy and trying to communicate (as well as trying to find his house, which is practically in the middle of a maze of nameless roads in Namino village).
Then after that and before the teaching we went to the 105 yen sushi place in Ichinomiya and had some delicious sushi taken off the conveyor belt. All told it was less than twelve bucks for two people to eat!
This morning I woke up at 6:45 and nearly got lost in the maze of nameless roads in my mountain town while running. I finished a loop that was delightful partly because at the end of my run I got to say hi to all the little kids walking to school in groups of five or ten. I've finally decided that life is much fuller when you wake up early every day. Tomorrow the school has a 20 kilometer walk planned for an all day field trip to the local fountainhead. So maybe I'll skip my 10k run for the day...
Running is one of the most freeing activities. I feel so good when, and after, I run.
I had some reflections about Japanese culture today but I don't feel like being too analytical right now. I am looking forward to going to Kyoto on Saturday with my mom because we've both lived in a medieval town in Italy (because of her work) and thus I feel like we will have an interesting perspective on Japan's most historically rich city. I also want to take many pictures and appreciate the intricate beauty that exists there.
Above there is a picture of Neko-dake, one of the peaks of Mt. Aso. I'll try to put these photos and more in my new photo site linked on the right (at the top of my links). Please enjoy (if inclined)!
